Quiet Family Retreat

Reviewed on 2021-10-19 by David

We stayed here for 5 days overlapping the Autumn Glory festival. We've been to Deep Creek in the past and its just beautiful. This house though really made it special. Its private, not too large, and not too small. Didn't get much use out of the screened-in portion of the front porch. Things we loved: - Quiet (part-way up a steep climb) - Convenient (Close to groceries, gas, food, and lake [but not too close]) - Clean (inside) - Hot-Tub - 3.5 baths!! (2 en-suite) Thoughts: - The house is nestled in the trees, which means several things - Lots of fallen leaves - Lots of "nature" in and around the house (spiders and such) <-- Not a big deal - Steep Gravel driveway (we went in October and it was not an issue in a minivan) - No flat area for kiddos to "play in the yard" except for the top of the gravel driveway where the cars park - The fire pit is excellent with plenty of seating - The deck / porch wraps around two thirds of the house, which is really nice - Grill - The grill is a 22" Weber Charcoal Kettle - The grill brush needs some love - I smoked a pork shoulder in it without issue - We loved the layout of the house, primarily the large open main area with an upstairs "loft" book nook / desk. - Bathrooms were immaculate - The Hot Tub is clearly an "older" hot tub (as seen from the weathering of the wood on the outside) but the tub itself was fully functioning and clean (though some of the jets appeared to not work as well, this wasn't an issue). - Beds were fine (not too hard, not too soft) though the noise from the springs in the first-floor master bed made it seem like it could use replacement, it didn't affect our sleep though. - Furnace can be a bit loud (its in a closet next to the main living space), but we didn't even notice it after a day or two. This was the first time we stayed with Railey, though not the last. Highly recommended, and a reasonable price.

Keep looking this place was Bad! It smelled terrible! Two full cans of Freebreeze made it only tolerable. Dirty ripped couches. Small barely comfortable beds. Flat pillows so bring your own. Outside looked very rough with spider webs and it needs repainting.
We’re sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay at Mountaineer, Lee, and appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. We’ve not previously received complaints of an unpleasant odor in the home and will have our maintenance team address this right away. Thanks for alerting us to this issue! We’ll share your comments regarding the furniture and bedding with the homeowner for reference when updating Mountaineer. Finally, we’ll also alert our landscaping team to your description of the outdoor areas of the home in order to return them to tip-top shape. Again, we regret to know that you did not enjoy your stay and we sincerely hope to remedy any of your lingering disappointment with a fantastic visit in the future. - Lainey, Railey Vacations

Horrible Beds!

It's only because the house was beautiful that I give this rating an 'OK'. The beds were so bad my husband and I kept rolling on top of each other all night in the beautiful bedroom on the first floor. Both of us had lasting muscle and rib pains into several days after our return home. DO NO SLEEP IN THIS HOUSE. My daughters had the same problem with the beds upstairs. Again, do not sleep in this house. Yes, it is beautiful. Sitting on the porch was wonderful. The view was amazing. But DO NOT SLEEP IN THIS HOUSE!!
Thanks for your review, Francine. I’m sorry to hear that the beds at Mountaineer did not work for your family. We understand how important a comfy bed is, especially on vacation. Because each person prefers a different type of mattress, it is difficult to provide a perfect solution for all guests. That being said, we will be sure to share your comments with the homeowner for consideration during future updates. I’m so glad that you enjoyed other aspects of the home, such as the beautiful porch and view. We appreciate your feedback and hope to host you again soon. - Lainey, Railey Vacations

The house was great! Had all the cooking utensils we needed, beds were comfortable, showers worked well, the TV was nice. We read some reviews from a couple years ago saying the technology needed updating, but it seems the owners have updated it since that review because there are updated flat screen TVs and a bluetooth speaker now. We brought our Firestick from home to watch Netflix and Hulu on, and were able to hook it up easily. The only thing was the dishwasher was broken, and we did not know until we had it loaded up and tried to run it. I am assuming that will be remedied for future guests. We loved sitting on the big porch in the morning drinking coffee and watching all the deer walk through the yard, grilling in the evenings, and using the fire pit at night. It was so great that this house was dog friendly so our dog could come on our trip with us! He loved all the hiking we did! Loved the house and would definitely return!
Thanks for your review, Kristin! We regret to hear that the dishwasher was not functioning properly during your stay - we understand what an inconvenience this is and appreciate you bringing it to our attention. We’ll have our team visit Mountaineer to make necessary repairs and to ensure the dishwasher is in working condition for our future guests. Beyond this issue, I’m so glad to know that Mountaineer offered everything you and your pup needed for a great getaway. Thanks again for your feedback, and we hope to host you again soon! - Lainey, Railey Vacations

My kids had lots of fun there. Had no complains about this house other than the shower was a little weak. But we solved the problem by showering and swimming in the Garret’s college community swimming pool which was such a surprise! It was a standard swimming pool 6 50-meters lanes and a play pool. It was included and free for us!
We’re so happy that you enjoyed the pool, Jennifer, and appreciate your feedback regarding the water pressure. We’ll take a look to see if there is any room for improvement there. Thanks for your review! We hope to host you again soon. - Lainey, Railey Vacations

Hideawy woodsy vaca better than expected

The house is in a nice secluded area right off the lake. Ideal private location! Clean and spacious with all you basic needs if you’re wanting to spend some time at the home. We loved the fireplace and porch areas! The hot tub was very clean and easy to use. Some things need updated like the pots and pans, bedding/pillows, old box tv, hot tub cover, as well as, the wood deck retained water and froze into ice because the 2x4’s are not spaced out at all. For the price of the stay it is reasonable for what you get. We would stay there again certainly and these are basic fixes truly. We drive a truck so it was no problem getting up the snowy driveway. But anyone with a car may need to just park at the bottom if weather is harsh. We brought our own pool towels to use, and thankful we did, due to the one towel per person availability. If you’re used to the simplicity of an Airbnb check in/out this was a lot more time and travel involved. We had three times we thought were our check out 1.vrbo 2.the home rental co. 3.the time listed on our check in sheet. Just make sure to call and ask. We waited a half hr. At the front desk for them to tell us we couldn’t go to the house till 4pm on the dot and they didn’t want to give the key till then. Check out expected was I believe 10am. That’s a tad early, is how we felt, to be able to eat, clean up the place And pack up, then to drive the garbage up to the bin and drive to the place to drop off the key, in rainy snow conditions. Would recommend an 11am atleast for people was one of the main complaints we had. If you want a private, relaxing, woodsy retreat to maybe ski and come back and cook and relax this place is amazing and I would recommend it to anyone! Plenty of bedrooms for a family stay and huge dining table for food and games. We will be back for this same type of trip in the winter for sure! The house was much better then the pictures projected online honestly. We were pleased by that. Loved our 3 day quick vaca.
Thanks for this detailed review, Ashlee! We'll be sure to share your suggestions with our team and the homeowner to ensure that your next visit to Mountaineer is even better than the last. We're glad you had a good getaway and hope you'll visit again soon. - Lainey, Railey Vacations
