Things to Do at Deep Creek Lake

Whether you’re getting away with your entire family or spending a quick weekend away with your significant other, the four-legged family members often tag along for vacation, too. The great part about our four-season community and environment is that in almost any season, there are plenty of great places to explore while also letting your dogs have some fun. Spring is an especially great time to hike and get outside! After the doldrums of winter, almost everyone is itching to get outside and enjoy the warming weather and spend more time outdoors. It’s also generally a less crowded time of year, which might be even better when hiking with your dog. We’ve rounded up the best places to take the pups on your next trip to Deep Creek Lake!

  • Explore the lake with your dog by renting a double kayak from  Wisp Resort or High Mountain Sports
  • Fork Run Recreation Area – If you’re looking for a beautiful spot to hike or bike, look no further than Fork Run Recreation Area! With nearly 10 miles of trails just over the mountain from Wisp Resort, you’ll find options for all skill levels. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a laid-back afternoon or a bit of a challenge with your furry friends by your side!
  • Off-Leash Dog Park – Dog lovers will be excited to know that Garrett County has two fantastic dog parks! The Deep Creek Lake Lion’s Club has a great off-leash dog run at 1249 Bumble Bee Road, complete with separate fenced areas for big and small pups, plus handy water stations. For those in Oakland, there’s also a fenced dog park at 27 Oakland Rosedale Road, where your dogs can romp freely! It even includes agility equipment for some extra fun!
  • Kendall Trail - Looking for a family-friendly adventure? Check out Kendall Trail! This lovely 4-mile out-and-back hike is perfect for all ages and your four-legged companions too. Keep your eyes peeled for beautiful flowers and wildlife as you stroll along the scenic Youghiogheny River.
  • Hoyes Crest - For those seeking a bit more of a challenge, Hoyes Crest is Maryland’s highest peak at 3,360 feet! This moderate to difficult hike rewards you with stunning views from the top. Don’t forget to keep your dog on a leash as you explore the trails.
  • Swallow Falls State Park – And here’s a treat for the whole family—did you know you can take your dog to see Maryland’s tallest free-falling waterfall? It should definitely be on your to-do list! With a short and gentle walking path, this park is great for everyone, including your pups. They can join you in the day-use area and along the Canyon Trail, and leashed dogs are welcome in the campground and on the trails leading to the state forest. Plus, the park features several lovely waterfalls and even a pavilion for a quick snack or a moment to unwind.
  • Deep Creek Lake State Park – Looking for a fun day out with your furry friend? Deep Creek Lake State Park is a fantastic choice! While your pup can't frolic on the sandy beach, there's plenty of space for them to enjoy. Bring your pup along to the Browning, Beckman, and Garrett Camp Loops, explore all the trails, or head to the boat ramps and Discovery Center parking area, complete with trail access. Don't miss the gorgeous view of the lake from the Thayerville Fire Tower if you're up for a hike. Pups can also cool off with a swim. They are allowed to swim from shoreline in all areas except the swimming beach, docks or fishing piers. With its diverse terrain and multiple trails, this park is perfect for repeat visits without ever feeling like you've seen it all!
  • Herrington Manor State Park – Nestled just south of Swallow Falls State Park, Herrington Manor State Park is a delightful escape covering over 360 acres, including a serene 53-acre lake. With 12 miles of mild, level trails looping back to the main buildings, it’s an ideal spot for a peaceful morning or afternoon adventure. Although your pets will have to sit out the beach fun, they can still enjoy the beautiful surroundings elsewhere in the park.
  • New Germany State ParkFor a dog-friendly adventure in Grantsville, MD, head to New Germany State Park. Positioned between Big Savage Mountain and Meadow Mountain, this park offers diverse forests, a quaint lake, and 10 miles of multi-use trails perfect for exploring with your dog. Pets are welcome in the Hemlock camp loop, some cabins, the day-use area, and even on the lake. Just remember, they aren't allowed on groomed trails during cross-country ski season or on the sandy beach area.
  • Garrett State Forest – Right between Swallow Falls and Herrington Manor, Garrett State Forest sprawls over 7,000 acres of natural beauty. Discover the trail that links Swallow Falls and Herrington Manor—it’s more than 6 miles of wide, flat paths that were once railroad tracks. Don't miss the Rock Maze, a natural wonder that’s more spectacle than maze, but fascinating nonetheless. It’s a perfect spot for a day of exploration with your four-legged friend!
